Nhugu Daye Bhintuna:: Happy New Year 1129

It’s my great pleasure to wish you all my happy new year 1129(Nepal Sambat). I wish for peace, progress and prosperity of all Nepalese in this auspicious celebration of New Year -1129.

Most of my Readers who are not aware of Nepal Sambat may be surprised to get this wish in the mid of Nepali Year (2065 BS) and in the end of English Year ( 2008 AD).

Most of the countries have their own New Year. China has the 15 days New Year celebration starting from 26th Jan (Lunar New year).Sri Lankan celebrates the New Year on every 13th April While Bangladesh has New Year celebration on 14th April every year. Even in a country different ethnic communities celebrate their New Year in different date like Marathi people celebrate New Year called Gudi pawa on 1st day of month Chaitra in BS (which lies in between March and April), Panjabi celebrate New Year Baishaki on the 14/15 April.

In the same respect, one of the ethnic communities, Newar, of Himalayan country, Nepal, celebrates New Year today as Nepal Sambhat. I belong to this ethic community which is famous for its rich culture not only in Nepal but all over the world.

It is my great privilege to write brief about my ethnic community in my blog

Newar: At a glance

Newar are the indigenous people of Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley and are in sixth largest ethnic group in the country representing about 6% of the population. Nepal Bhasa is the mother tongue and Hinduism/Buddhism is the main religion. They are densely dwelling in the Kathmandu valley though spread all over the country and also in some portion of India like in Darjeeling and Sikkim. Ranjana Script is the original Script of Newari though it can be written in Devanagari Script. This Community uses Lunar Calendar Nepal Sambat which only consists 354 days per year due to the fact lunar month has 29 or 30 days based on the movement of the moon.

Typical Newari Dance : Lakhe Dance

Newar are believed to be good businessman by profession though they have good skill in arts and crafts as well as scores are farmer in this community. Newar are famous for their cultures and traditions and very rich in festivals and delicious cuisine in every festival. They have multilevel hierarchy in caste system and lots of superstitions and tattoo still prevail in this community. They worship various gods and goddesses of Hindu along with Living Goddess KUMARI.
